Egg Freezing Today

2. WHAT IS AN EGG CELL?

A human egg cell, or ovum wherein biologic terms, is the female reproductive cell or gamete in humans.

It is a single cell that, when combined with a male sperm cell, results in embryo.

  • Egg cells is one of the largest cells in the body, visible to the naked eye, with a diameter of about 100 micrometers.
  • Structure: Egg cell is spherical shape and composed of cell membrane, a surrounding glycoprotein layer called the zona pellucida, cytoplasm filled with nutrients and organelles, and a nucleus containing half of the genetic material needed for human life.
  • Genetic Content: The nucleus of the egg cell contains 23 chromosomes, which is half the number of chromosomes in most other human cells. This is referred to as being haploid.
  • Function: The primary role of the egg cell is to fuse with a male sperm cell during fertilization. This fusion creates a zygote, which contains the full complement of 46 chromosomes necessary for human development.
  • Lifecycle: Woman are born with a finite number of immature egg cells (around 1-2 million), which decrease in number over time.

Typically, one egg matures and is released from the ovary each menstrual cycle in a process known as ovulation.

Once released, the egg remains viable for fertilization for about 12-24 hours.

  • Role in Reproduction: The egg cell provides not only half of the genetic material but also the cytoplasmic environment, organelles, and initial nutrients necessary for the early stages of embryo development until the embryo can establish its own metabolic processes.

In summary, the human egg cell is essential for sexual reproduction, combining with a sperm cell to form the first stage of a new human organism.
